Garrett, leader of the Edison, New Jersey-based 18-hospital system, this year was named chair of the World Economic Forum’s Health and Healthcare Governor’s Community. In 2023, Hackensack Meridian Health intends to become one of the first health systems to use Google Cloud’s generative artificial intelligence search function for healthcare. Its Hackensack University Medical Center was listed among the Top 25 Hospitals in Environmental Excellence by Practice Greenhealth, which aims to help health systems become better stewards of the environment; it is one of only two hospitals in the country to be recognized every year since the award’s creation. Garrett started his career in the Hackensack system in 1981, becoming president and CEO of Hackensack University Health Network in 2009. When that system merged with Meridian Health in 2016, he was tapped to lead the new network.
