R. Shawn Martin
Executive vice president and CEO, American Academy of Family Physicians
Martin began heading the medical specialty organization focused on primary care in 2020. Given the primary care shortage throughout the U.S., the organization has made expanding residency training programs a top priority. This year saw the most incoming family medicine residents in history, when 4,530 medical students and graduates matched into programs. Martin has also testified before Congress about the need to preserve access to primary care amid an increasingly consolidated market. He is a driving force behind the Primary Care for America collaborative, which seeks to advance positive change and investment through innovation and leadership. Before being promoted to his current role, Martin was AAFP’s senior vice president of advocacy, practice advancement and policy.
