Chair and chief technology officer, Oracle
Oracle completed its acquisition of Cerner, one of the country’s largest electronic health record vendors, for more than $28 billion in 2022 to be an “anchor asset” for the company’s expansion into healthcare. At the time, Cerner held a $10 billion contract with the Veterans Affairs Department to modernize the government agency’s EHR system. In 2023, the VA renegotiated the contract following rollout delays and other hurdles; Oracle Cerner said the revised agreement reflects the company’s commitment to veteran healthcare. In September, Oracle announced it is adding a voice-enabled generative artificial intelligence feature to the EHR system, aimed at allowing clinicians to take notes, order medications and perform other tasks more easily. Other parts of Oracle’s business, such as cloud services, have generated double-digit revenue growth in the most recent fiscal year. Ellison, who founded Oracle in 1977, was CEO of the company until 2014.
