CEO, University of Pennsylvania Health System
Mahoney leads the six-hospital health system serving Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey that, along with the Perelman School of Medicine, makes up Penn Medicine. He has been outspoken about what he sees as necessary changes to the industry. In contrast to many in the hospital sector, he supported legislation this year to create minimum staffing standards for nurses in Pennsylvania hospitals. He also announced that the health system will no longer participate in voluntary aspects of the U.S. News and World Report annual “Best Hospitals” rankings or promote the rankings. In addition, he has worked to put metrics in place tying his compensation, as well as that of more than 500 other senior leaders, to the reduction of patient health disparities.
