Dr. Karen DeSalvo
Chief health officer, Google
DeSalvo leads a team working to create transformative healthcare tools. She has noted the major role artificial intelligence can play in the sector, pointing to its potential to equip clinicians and patients alike with useful information. This year, Google Cloud made its large language model for healthcare, Med-PaLM 2, available to more organizations; users included HCA Healthcare and Mayo Clinic. A few months later, it announced that it was rolling out generative AI search function capabilities with Mayo, Highmark Health and Hackensack Meridian Health. Beyond AI, Google partnered this year with the Food is Medicine Institute at Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University to find ways that technology can provide people with accurate and easy-to-access nutrition information. DeSalvo’s previous roles include National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and New Orleans health commissioner.
