Founder and CEO, Epic Systems
Founded by Faulkner in 1979, electronic health record vendor Epic Systems dominates the industry. As of 2022, research showed it was used by 35.9% of hospitals and affiliated with 47% of acute-care hospital beds in the U.S. Faulkner has vowed to address ongoing problems in the sector—such as clinician burnout and workforce shortages—through advancements in Epic’s services. The company has started using generative artificial intelligence in a stated bid to increase productivity for providers, back-office staff and schedulers. In April, it announced an agreement with Microsoft to integrate generative AI technology into its software. A few months later, Microsoft subsidiary Nuance Communications said it would make a separate AI-enabled tool that summarizes conversations between clinicians and patients and enters them directly into EHRs available to all Epic users in 2024.
