Dr. Humayun Chaudhry
President and CEO, Federation of State Medical Boards
Chaudhry has served as the head of the nonprofit organization representing state medical boards within the U.S. and its territories since 2009. He has spoken out about the role boards play in disciplining doctors who engage in activities that may cause patient harm. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chaudhry argued such behavior could include spreading misinformation about the virus. Under his leadership, the federation has also urged medical boards to adjust their licensing questions, moving away from potentially intrusive inquiries about mental health that could discourage physicians from seeking help. In 2023, he also pushed back against efforts to rank state medical boards by serious disciplinary actions taken, saying doing so could miss context about the wide range of steps licensing organizations can take to address problems.
