Farrugia has held the top spot at Mayo—which cares for more than 1.3 million people with serious or complex illnesses each year—since 2019. A leader in the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare, including through its Mayo Clinic Platform, the organization is a founding member of the Coalition for Health AI. Farrugia has promoted the coalition’s recently published guidelines to support credibility, fairness and transparency in the use of healthcare AI. Under his leadership, Mayo is working with Google Cloud to develop a generative AI-enabled enterprise search capability for its healthcare providers and researchers. Earlier this year, Mayo and GE HealthCare announced a strategic collaboration aimed at developing technology to precisely diagnose and treat medical conditions, promoting the personalization of care for patients. A professor of medicine and physiology, Farrugia previously led Mayo Clinic in Florida and the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine, along with co-founding the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation.
