Holmberg is in charge of the $26 billion organization, based in Pittsburgh, that includes one of the country’s largest Blue Cross Blue Shield insurers and a regional hospital and physician network. He has pointed to the potential for artificial intelligence to transform healthcare, saying in October that the organization has spent $1.5 billion building a technology platform that it’s constantly changing and evolving. He has also flagged the advantages of an integrated system when it comes to capitalizing on opportunities. Under his leadership, Highmark has expanded its insurance markets in northeast Pennsylvania and New York. In 2024, it will grow in southeast Pennsylvania too. Holmberg chairs America’s Health Insurance Plans’s board of directors and serves on the boards of VSP Vision and the National Institute for Healthcare Management Foundation.
