Vice Admiral Dr. Vivek Murthy
U.S. Surgeon General, Department of Health and Human Services
Murthy, who first served as surgeon general during the Obama administration, was tapped again for the post by President Joe Biden in 2021. He is passionate about mental health, speaking out about the “epidemic of loneliness” in the country, calling for pro-connection public policies and issuing an advisory about the possible negative effects of social media on youth well-being. Between his surgeon general appointments, he co-chaired Biden’s COVID-19 Advisory Board. He previously practiced internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and taught at Harvard Medical School.
