Brewer has led the retail health and pharmacy giant since 2021. In addition to its nearly 9,000 retail stores, the organization aims to open at least 1,000 in-store clinics through VillageMD, in which it has a majority stake, by 2027. Under Brewer's leadership, Walgreens has made big moves further into the healthcare space through its acquisition of CareCentrix, which provides care coordination and benefit management. Walgreens also announced plans in September to pay $1.37 billion for the remaining stake in Shields Health Solutions, a specialty pharmacy company. In November, the company celebrated its opening of 100 “Health Corners,” retail care centers staffed by pharmacists or registered nurses. Brewer was previously CEO of Starbucks and, before that, Sam’s Club.
