Oostra retired in October after a 25-year career at the 12-hospital system. He had been president and CEO since 2009.  Oostra’s legacy includes the $1.4 billion acquisition of HCR ManorCare in 2018, which made ProMedica one of the 15 largest nonprofit health systems by revenue at the time. Under his leadership, ProMedica also invested in several social projects such as building housing, providing literacy training and operating a grocery store. In January 2020, he called for a congressionally mandated national commission to make policy recommendations on how to improve population health, limit spending growth and address social factors affecting health outcomes.
