R. Shawn Martin
Executive vice president and CEO, American Academy of Family Physicians
As CEO since 2020, Martin has promoted family medicine by advocating on behalf of his organization’s more than 127,000 physicians and medical students. In November, he traveled to Capitol Hill to ask Congress for Medicare payment reforms and regulatory changes to reduce the administrative burden for physicians. Under his leadership, the organization has worked to preserve and expand telehealth flexibilities to improve access to care. Martin also has asked lawmakers to prioritize spending to broaden the size and appeal of the primary care field, pointing to a study that projects a shortage of up to 48,000 primary care physicians by 2034. Before being promoted to the top job, Martin was AAFP’s senior vice president of advocacy, practice advancement and policy.
