Ernest Grant
President, American Nurses Association
Grant, named president in 2019, uses his role as head of the ANA to advocate for the nation’s registered nurses. Among his priorities are promoting diversity in nursing ranks and addressing workplace issues that lead to burnout and high levels of turnover. Nursing shortages, already a challenge before the COVID-19 pandemic, have only worsened in the past three years. Grant has worked to remove regulatory barriers to care facing advanced practice nurses, so they can work at the top of their license. He also has spoken out on mandatory overtime, workplace violence and racism. Grant, an internationally recognized burn care expert, is the first man to be appointed ANA president. He served as president of the North Carolina Nurses Association from 2009 to 2011.
