Ozuah heads the umbrella organization for Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System’s 10 member hospitals, a role he’s held since 2019. He seeks to create a culture of equity and inclusion at Montefiore, in part by identifying and recruiting individuals from a variety of candidate pools who represent diverse backgrounds and skill sets. The system also offers wellness-promoting programs throughout its service area. Ozuah has fostered innovations in medicine and science at the health system: Earlier this year, clinicians at Montefiore Health System in the Bronx performed the world’s first HIV-positive to HIV-positive heart transplant. Montefiore also received grants this year to test strategies to limit COVID-19 spread among formerly incarcerated people and to develop novel cancer therapies, especially in historically marginalized communities.
