Katz takes a holistic approach to his job as head of the nation's largest municipal health system. He has expanded outreach efforts across the system, providing care to more than 100,000 uninsured New Yorkers. Most recently, the system is focusing on another group: homeless people. Katz is working with New York Mayor Eric Adams on the “Housing is Health” initiative to build 650 new affordable homes near NYC Health’s facilities over the next five years to help some of the most vulnerable patients. “Housing is fundamental to good health,” Katz said during the project launch announcement in November. Managing complex problems and focusing on new revenue-generating initiatives have helped Katz close a nearly $2 billion budget hole since taking over leadership of the system in 2017.
