Dr. Jaewon Ryu
President and CEO, Geisinger
Ryu uses a spirit of innovation to tackle some of the most complex issues of caring for a sizeable population at Geisinger, many of whom are older and live in more rural areas. The key lies in providing flexible services: By expanding tele-behavioral health, for instance, the provider reduced its backlog of patients awaiting appointments. It also used its care-at-home program to reduce costs and improve outcomes for patients enrolled in its Medicare Advantage plan. Ryu has said he intends to keep investing in complex tertiary services, but to bring the health system’s capabilities closer to where patients live and work. He has been CEO since 2018, responsible for an integrated network of 10 hospitals, a health plan with more than 550,000 members and the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine.
