Farrugia, a Mayo physician for nearly 30 years, became CEO in 2019 and was previously vice president of the Mayo Clinic and CEO of Mayo Clinic in Florida. At Mayo, Farrugia has sought to solve the prickly problems of uneven access and quality using a platform-based strategy. Through its Mayo Clinic Platform, the organization’s physicians and researchers have developed artificial intelligence algorithms to assist in the diagnosis of several conditions, including breast cancer, neuromuscular disease and cardiovascular disease. The organization—which comprises 16 hospitals and 53 clinics—has also pioneered the use of acute-level care outside brick-and-mortar facilities, forming the Advanced Care at Home Coalition with Kaiser Permanente and the hospital-at-home vendor Medically Home.
