Thompson plays a key role in growing UnitedHealthcare’s lucrative Medicare Advantage membership. In the third quarter of 2022, UnitedHealthcare, which has 51.3 million members, posted $62 billion in revenue, with the health plan division accounting for 76.6% of parent UnitedHealth Group’s company-wide overall sales. As part of its strategy, the company has boosted home visits to try and ensure members get routine care. It is also offering plans on more state marketplaces in 2023, which Thompson has pointed to as a meaningful way to grow its relevancy. Thompson was tapped for the top job in the company’s health plan division in 2021. He was previously CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s government programs.
