Vice Admiral Dr. Vivek Murthy
U.S. Surgeon General, Department of Health and Human Services
Murthy started his second stint as the so-called nation’s doctor in 2021, addressing critical public health issues such as healthcare worker burnout, the proliferation of health misinformation, youth mental health, and social isolation and loneliness. He also advises President Joe Biden's COVID-19 pandemic response operation. Murthy previously served as surgeon general in the Obama administration, where he guided the national response to issues such as the Ebola and Zika viruses, the opioid epidemic and mental health. He has made the case for categorizing loneliness as a public health matter, saying that it is the basis for many of the problems plaguing society, such as alcohol and drug addiction, violent crimes, depression and anxiety.
