Madeline Bell
President and CEO, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Bell first joined CHOP as a pediatric nurse in 1983. Her nursing background has helped keep her strategy centered on the patient throughout her career. Since becoming CEO in 2015, Bell has focused on expanding and diversifying services. In January, she opened the organization’s second hospital and plans to build out pediatric behavioral health facilities, including an outpatient center, three inpatient units and a walk-in crisis center. Reflecting on her journey from staff nurse to the C-suite, she says that it required getting out of her comfort zone and taking a “chance on herself.” Bell is board chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and serves on other boards. She’s also an adviser to numerous international hospitals. CHOP generated revenue of $3.4 billion in fiscal 2021.
