Dr. Joanne Conroy
President and CEO, Dartmouth Health
Conroy takes the long view in leading her healthcare system, which she says is more like running a marathon than a sprint. She tackled the organization’s challenges head on, though, when she became CEO in 2017, turning around a $7 million operating loss for that fiscal year to post a net income of $47 million in fiscal 2018. The system, which includes five member hospitals, is also improving access to care through telehealth services, such as virtual urgent care. A $64 million ambulatory surgery center opened last May, and a $150 million five-story expansion project is set to open in January 2023. The organization also has more than 24 clinics and is tied to the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine. In her management approach, Conroy relies on what she calls organizational resilience, which requires planning for and adapting “to incremental or disruptive change in order to not only survive but to thrive.”
