Throughout 2020, healthcare organizations were forced to turn inward to help staff not only confront the stress related to a global pandemic, but also issues around social injustice. For Tanya Blackmon, the focus is on creating a workplace where differences are celebrated and diversity is a “strategic lever.”

Blackmon and her team in 2020 launched Thriving Together, an initiative that offered front-line workers a variety of resources to help with their wellness. She also helped launch a COVID-19 relief fund, which fielded more than 26,500 requests for assistance and paid out $9.4 million last year. Beyond that, Blackmon led efforts to increase breast cancer screenings for minority populations and spurred Novant to take more of a leadership position in offering services for LGBTQ patients. She heads a program to promote female leaders, resulting in 30% of women in the initiative getting promotions.
