Leading the nation’s largest union of registered nurses, Castillo has been at the forefront of raising concerns about worker safety during the coronavirus pandemic, even as attention shifts to vaccination efforts. In late January, NNU organized hundreds of events in nearly 20 states “to put the hospital industry on notice demanding people over profit,” Castillo noted in a Jan. 30 tweet. The union has been active in lobbying for strong worker protections to be included in President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 response legislation.
