Dr. Nader Moazami
Surgical director of heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, NYU Langone Transplant Institute
Moazami joined NYU Langone in 2017 and has been focused on not only advancing the heart transplant service line, but addressing organ shortages through innovation, including publishing a study on donation after circulatory death, which NYU started doing in 2020. The procedure involves keeping blood circulating in the donor’s body as clinicians assess the heart’s condition. Since 2019, NYU’s transplant program has scored one of the shortest wait times and best one-year post transplant survival rates in the region. During the pandemic, Moazami won emergency clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to retool oxygenation machines to increase oxygen levels for COVID-19 patients suffering from pneumonia.
