Dr. Michael Schlosser
Senior vice president of care transformation and innovation, HCA Healthcare
Schlosser played a key leadership role in HCA’s work on improving care for acute ischemic stroke patients. The effort resulted in his team creating new, more efficient ways of moving these patients through the emergency department, including eliminating unnecessary steps that would delay care. The process has been scaled up across all of HCA’s hospitals. Schlosser also added a decision-support tool that further sped up care for these patients. By the end of 2020, a couple of years after implementation, average door-to-needle time across all HCA hospitals fell from 60 minutes to 35, with 85% of patients receiving the clot-buster tPA in less than 60 minutes. The expected mortality rate for stroke patients has also fallen.
