Dr. Hyung (Harry) Cho
System chief value officer, NYC Health + Hospitals
Cho is the public health system’s first chief value officer and founded its High Value Care Initiative. The goal is to target overuse of services, where harm outweighs benefit to the patient. More than 50 system-wide projects have been launched. Although data collection is ongoing, initial results suggest that more than 90% of the targeted projects have seen significant reductions in overutilization. One example is a 17% reduction in unnecessary use of peripherally inserted central catheters, which can lead to infections and clots. Beyond the safety component, that project resulted in $330,000 in cost savings per year. Overall return on investment for the High Value Care Initiative is estimated to be around $8 million per year.
