Hunter is the first African-American to serve as CEO of the Portland-based system. When he took over in 2016, Hunter was the only person of color in the C-suite. Now, all six of CareOregon’s corporate officers identify as either a person of color and/or female. He also pushed the board of directors to create a new corporate officer position—chief equity, diversity and inclusion officer—and pulled together a task force to address equity across the organization. Under his leadership, CareOregon invested $7.5 million into state’s behavioral health workforce through grants to behavioral health providers.
