Dr. Donald Whiting
Chief medical officer, Allegheny Health Network
Whiting led the creation of consortium of regional health systems chief medical officers to meet weekly during the pandemic and coordinate care and resource allocation. The consortium continues to meet regularly in 2021. He also ensured that the health system stayed focused on needs of front-line workers, including development of the Heroes Appreciation Program—a $5 million initiative to benefit roughly 12,000 workers in recognition of their work during COVID. Whiting held a key leadership role in AHN’s vaccination rollout, including large public events and stadiums in Pittsburgh. Beyond the pandemic, he’s overseen other innovative efforts at AHN, such as expanding the virtual ICU program, which added 60-bed capacity to AHN’s network; repurposing an old acute-care hospital as community kitchen to help address food insecurity; and using predictive modeling to shorten length of stay.
