Gene Woods
President and CEO, Atrium Health
Like virtually every health system, Atrium Health experienced deep financial losses during the first part of the year due to shutting down elective procedures. Atrium saw a 74% drop in net income during the first nine months from its original projections. Nonetheless, Woods oversaw completion of a combination with Wake Forest Baptist Health, which will bring a new Wake Forest School of Medicine campus to Charlotte. Atrium also invested $451 million into capital projects this year. Woods personally donated $1 million to kick-start an emergency care fund for Atrium Health employees. In July, Woods presented testimony before Congress on the importance of providing access to care for the underserved and aging populations. During the racial unrest of the summer of 2020, Woods was vocal about social equity and the importance of providing a voice to marginalized communities.
