Before taking the helm at Newark, N.J.-based University Hospital in July 2019, Elnahal served as New Jersey’s health commissioner, where he pushed to reduce health disparities. He also reduced barriers to medication-assisted treatment for opioid addicts, among other things. Prior to that, he was chief quality officer of the Veterans Health Administration in the Obama administration.
