The end of 2017 saw Dignity Health and Catholic Health Initiatives ink a definitive agreement to merge. It was the culmination of a year of negotiations and, if made final, will result in Dean becoming co-CEO of a system with 139 hospitals, more than 159,000 employees and 25,000 physicians and other advanced-practice clinicians. Combined revenue would total $28.4 billion. In fiscal 2017, Dignity reported $384 million in net income and provided $2.6 billion in community benefits. Dean, whos been CEO since 2000, has also positioned Dignity to take advantage of the growing migration to outpatient care. The system partnered with Emerus to open micro-hospitals in Nevada and is working with GoHealth Urgent Care in San Francisco to offer patients more convenient care settings.
