A practicing and board-certified emergency physician, Wen is considered by many to be one of the nation's most forward-thinking public health officials. She's been a leader in trying to curtail the opioid crisis. In 2015, she was one of the first city health commissioners to issue a blanket prescription for the opioid-overdose reversal medication naloxone and implement widespread training on how to use it. She spearheaded a lobbying effort in Maryland to make naloxone available over the counter.
