Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare - 2018
Leana Wen
Health commissioner, City of Baltimore
A practicing and board-certified emergency physician, Wen is considered by many to be one of the nation's most forward-thinking public health officials. She's been a leader in trying to curtail the opioid crisis. In 2015, she was one of the first city health commissioners to issue a blanket prescription for the opioid-overdose reversal medication naloxone and implement widespread training on how to use it. She spearheaded a lobbying effort in Maryland to make naloxone available over the counter. Nationally, Wen testified before Congress on the need for increased funding to help communities and providers fight the problem and has worked with local businesses to help them understand how they can be part of the solution.
