Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare - 2018
Gene Woods
President and CEO, Atrium Health
It was a busy 2017 for Woods. He served as chairman of the American Hospital Association, completed his first full year as president and CEO of Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas HealthCare System), and announced plans to create a mega-regional system by merging with UNC Health Care. And this month he announced Georgia-based Navicent Health will join Atrium as well. Under Woods' leadership, Atrium turned a significant corner financially. Net operating revenue grew by $375 million in the first nine months of 2017 compared with the same period in 2016. Woods is making his mark outside of healthcare as well. As protests in Charlotte, N.C., erupted following the fatal shooting of Keith Scott in late 2016, Woods met with other minority leaders to find ways of bringing the city together. And, he's pushed Atrium to work with other health systems to address social determinants of health.
