Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare - 2018
Debra Canales
Executive vice president and chief administrative officer, Providence St. Joseph Health
Canales' work to drive physician engagement has paid dividends at Providence St. Joseph, which is reportedly in talks to merge with Ascension to create the nation's largest not-for-profit health system. Through her efforts to create a stable work environment, 84% of caregivers said in a 2017 survey that they planned to stay with the organization. This year, Canales will move the employee survey from annual to quarterly in order to ensure the organization can respond quickly to any issues that arise. Low nurse turnover has resulted in $10.4 million in savings. She's also led an effort that resulted in a 50% increase in women in senior leadership.
