In January, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper nominated Cohen to lead the state agency, citing her background as a physician and in healthcare policy circles. Cohen most recently served as chief operating officer and chief of staff at the CMS. Previously she was principal deputy director of the CMS' Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, monitoring the health insurance marketplace and private insurance regulation.
