America's Health Insurance Plans
Since July 2015, Tavenner has been president and CEO of America's Health Insurance Plans, the dominant lobbying organization for the health insurance industry. She is a former CMS administrator, appointed by President Barack Obama on an interim basis in 2011 after the departure of Dr. Don Berwick. She was officially confirmed for the post in 2013. She played a high-profile role during the initial implementation of the Affordable Care Act, including oversight of the state and federal insurance exchanges and rulemaking for expansion of the Medicaid program, currently in place in 31 states and the District of Columbia. Tavenner worked as a nurse and an executive at for-profit hospital chain HCA before entering the federal government.
