As majority leader, McConnell was the face of the Better Care Reconciliation Act, the Senate's version of the plan to repeal and replace Obamacare. McConnell, who was first elected in 1985, led the secretive efforts to draft multiple versions of the bill, the most recent of which'dubbed a 'skinny repeal''ultimately failed after Republican Sens. Susan Collins, John McCain and Lisa Murkowski voted 'no.' After the last defeat, McConnell criticized the Democrats, whom he said were not engaging with their counterparts across the aisle in efforts to reform the U.S. healthcare system.
