Van Gorder has headed the San Diego-based four-hospital integrated healthcare system since 2000. Scripps announced in April that it will play a consulting role with health plan Sistemas Medicos Nacionales to build a hospital in Tijuana, Mexico, to serve the growing binational community along the U.S.-Mexico border. The hospital will be a Scripps affiliate. In 2016, Scripps and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center announced a partnership to create the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center, part of a global collaborative of hospitals and healthcare systems.
