Undersecretary for health,
Veterans Affairs Department
Dr. David Shulkin had a lot dropped on his lap as he stepped into the role of undersecretary for health at the Veterans Affairs Department less than a year ago. A $2.5 billion budget shortfall, a wait-list scandal at a number of VA hospitals nationwide, and an increasing number of veterans using VA healthcare were all issues that met Shulkin at the door when he was confirmed for the post in June 2015. The VA has been working to improve access for veterans and improve customer service. In December, Shulkin, 56, announced plans for the Annie App, a text messaging service that sends appointment reminders and automated messages asking how the veterans are feeling. It should be available to veterans this spring. A board-certified internist, Shulkin was president of Morristown (N.J.) Medical Center for five years and also was vice president of its parent organization, Atlantic Health. Previously he was CEO at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.
