50 Most Influential Physician Executives – 2016
Rank: 19
Elizabeth Nabel
President, Brigham and Women's Hospital
Since 2010, Dr. Elizabeth Nabel has served as president of Brigham and Women's Health Care in Boston, and also as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. But in February 2015, another high-profile organization asked for Nabel's expertise: the National Football League. She was appointed as the first chief health and medical adviser in league history, and is working with the league's commissioner, Roger Goodell, to make the NFL safer as the specter of frequent concussions hangs over the game. Nabel, 64, is a cardiologist and biomedical researcher. From 2005 to 2009, she served as director of the National Institutes of Health's National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a federal agency that provides leadership for research, training and education to promote prevention and treatment of cardiac, lung and blood disease.
