As Senate majority leader, McConnell helped score a symbolic victory for Republicans in January when a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act made it to the president's veto pen after dozens of failed tries. That came after he and former House Speaker John Boehner were criticized by some of the more conservative members of the party for refusing to shut down the government in an effort to pull government funding from Planned Parenthood.
