For the nation's top law enforcement officer, much of this year's focus has involved challenging giant health insurance mergers and cracking down on fraudsters bilking millions from Medicare and Medicaid. The Justice Department has sued this year to block Anthem's $53 billion acquisition of Cigna and Aetna's $37 billion takeover of Humana. Lynch stated the mergers would "drastically" curb competition in the insurance industry, leading to higher premiums. Final resolution of the cases isn't expected until next year. Meanwhile, her department also charged 301 people this year in a series of healthcare-related sting operations, the most ever, for allegedly running scams that defrauded the government out of $900 million.
