Hammergren has led McKesson, a large drug distribution, medical supply and technology company, since 2001. Although enduring a tough year of losses that has prompted a wave of cost-cutting and a 4% cut in staff, he also has known years of explosive growth at McKesson along with strong profits. And it was during those times his compensation drew attention. "He's one of the nation's highest-paid CEOs--and you've never heard of him" was the headline of a 2012 article in The Daily Beast, the same year Hammergren made headlines for his $145 million compensation package. Hammergren announced in May that the company was looking to divest its technology business to help stem losses.
