Murthy barely squeaked through the Senate confirmation process in late 2014 because of political bickering, but he has used the seat as America's doctor to "modernize and expand" how public health information is distributed to the public. Conservative politicians and the powerful National Rifle Association disliked his stance of treating gun violence as a public health issue, but he has instead focused on other areas, such as the health effects of climate change. One of his cornerstone pitches has been to make walking easier and safer for people in their own communities.
