100 Most Influential People in Healthcare – 2016
Rank 97
Victor Dzau,
71
President, National Academy of Medicine
- Years on list: 2
The former CEO of the Duke University Health System has led the National Academy of Medicine, formerly known as the Institute of Medicine, since 2014. The independent body has played home to several influential pieces of medical analysis, including the 1999 report that said medical errors were killing thousands every year in hospitals. Most recently, Dzau oversaw the release of the academy's Dying in America report, which detailed the major gaps in care that people face near the end of life; he says the report is "one of the most frequently cited reports" in the academy's history.
