Long before Safyer took the top spot at the Bronx's premier health system, he was treating inmates at Rikers Island and working to fight New York City's HIV and tuberculosis epidemics during the 1990s. Safyer has worked at Montefiore for 34 years but became CEO of Montefiore Medical Center in 2007. The system has grown under his leadership and now comprises 10 hospitals, 150 clinics and more than 3,000 employed physicians. Safyer also spearheaded a partnership between Albert Einstein College of Medicine to grow research and education efforts at the system.
