aliff followed a prolific, 30-year tenure in academia with a slew of influential roles in government. A former professor of cardiology and the founder of the Duke Clinical Research Institute, Califf has had more than 1,200 peer-reviewed articles published and led landmark clinical trials. In federal spheres, he has headed numerous FDA centers and served on Institute of Medicine committees, including one to identify and prevent medication errors. Now, as FDA commissioner, he remains deeply involved in the country's most pressing medical issues, including device safety, drug shortages and the opioid crisis.
