The Joint Commission has been the gold standard for hospital accreditation since the 1950s, having accrediting about 20,000 healthcare organizations. Under Chassin, the organization has expanded, offering tools and training to hospitals so they can establish continuous improvement processes to stay in the forefront of patient safety and quality. An internist, Chassin created the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare in 2009 to tackle such patient-safety issues as healthcare-associated infection, hand-off communications, wrong-site surgery, surgical-site infections, and preventing avoidable heart failure hospitalizations. The center is sharing with its hospital clients how to drive change in their organizations to aim for zero incidents on those preventable problems.
