Benjamin was regarded as one of the country's most influential physician voices on public health issues even before he took over as head of the nation's largest organization for public health professionals in 2002. Previous roles included serving as secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The APHA's key mission has been to improve the country's health by promoting prevention and health equity. To that end, the association has been one of the leading advocates raising awareness of what role poverty, gun violence, climate change and housing play in health outcomes. The group's current Generation Public Health campaign calls for making the U.S. the healthiest nation by 2030.
